Transcription: The city of Petersburg lies less than 25 miles south of Richmond. In June 1864, Federal General Grant attacked Petersburg in order to cut supply lines to the Confederate capital. The assault failed and Grant began a siege of Petersburg that lasted 10 months, the longest in American history. The coastal area of City Point, cut off from the Confederates, became a gigantic supply depot for the 100,000 northern soldiers engaged in the siege.
